Roaming Exotic Places in the Search of Mushrooms, Nature and Culture

Nature-Oriented Tours for Curious Mycophiles

I have been traveling to Tibet during mushroom season for many years now doing research on mushrooms as a source of rural income. Repeatedly I have been asked to take people along to share this incredible experience. So in 2005, I designed my first tour and have been taking people every year. Having worked as a tour guide in Tibet for several companies I personally "suffered" from passing by some of the most exciting sights on a trip. I would have loved just to walk an old-growth forest or a flower covered meadow and have substantially more time to explore than the typical 10 minutes toilet stop or the 45 min sac lunch stop before moving on to the next town. And why not dedicating a hole day to a nature hike? Thus, I started to put together my own tours which allow plenty of time for enjoying and exploring nature. In addition, being out in nature one soon will meet the locals who base their survival on the environment and love to exchange about it. This said, cultural treasures will get definitely their fair share of attention, since it is this unique ancient spiritual culture that makes Tibet such an intriguing place.

Fungal & Floral Forays to Tibet 2008
These trips to Tibet are certain to be a once in a lifetime fungal, botanical and cultural experience in some of the most stunning landscapes on the planet. I am offering two 2-3 week-long guided journeys. Through the years many people have approached me wanting to accompany me to Tibet. In response I have put together a series of outrageous fungal forays to share the incredible experience of mushrooming in east Tibet, a place rich in natural and cultural diversity.

I have been to Tibet and the Himalayas more than 30 times in the last 20 years, mostly for environmental work, including mushroom and medicinal plant research, forestry work as well as tour guiding. Many of the regions of greatest beauty I have traveled on solo trips; these upcoming trips are designed to share the beauty and natural and cultural bounty of this incredible land with fellow fungal friends.

Our goals on this trip are simple: We will journey through incredible landscapes and exotic culture. Tibetans will accompany us on our mushroom forays as we hunt for a variety of mushrooms, which we will then enjoy in delicious culinary sensations both Tibetan and Chinese. We will traverse many altitudinal zones, from warm-temperate to alpine areas up to 16,000 ft (4800m), thereby experiencing a wide range of ecosystems, all with their unique flora, fauna and mycota.

All of our trips in Tibet are handled by High Asia Expeditions and their long-term Tibetan travel-logistic partners. These men and women are intimately acquainted with the backcountry areas of their Tibetan homeland. Many of our Tibetan guides also hold advanced training in First aid should the need arise and in general they are an absolute pleasure to explore Tibet with.

Our Tibet land costs include all transport in Tibet, nice hotels in cities (at least 3 Star), and the `best hotels' in small towns, camping when necessary and all regular meals. Please note that airfares are not included in the land costs. But they are listed in the trip descriptions to give a realistic idea. However, plane ticket prices fluctuate because of fuel costs and time of booking. If you prefer to use High Asia's service for booking let us know. In order to maximize immersion in the landscape and culture of Tibet we will be limiting the group size to 12 (Cordyceps expedition) and 14 people (Fungal Foray).

Also, don't hestitate contacting me if you are interested to have me guide or organize your personal trip or group travel on a different itinerary or schedule. I gladly arrange personalized tours on request.
